Just wanted to say hi.
Last year I studied Heathenry off and on. This year I am resolved to not only study it, but actually live it!
Not too many Heathens on here, it seems. Oh well. See you around.

Good luck with your experimental heathenry!

Date: 2011-04-02 12:39 pm (UTC)Though I've gotten "teased" by some friensds as "Going Pagan", I think as long as what you do is Lore-based you're on Soil Ground. One BIG problem in Heathenry is that we have too many Kings with obsessions of Kingdoms and less of the "Elder in the Woods" focusing on the Spiritual needs of Individuals and their lives. As IF th Ancestors only lived in large groups. Those who lived alone because of situation of job certianly didn't hand in their Hammers;>.....
'Course what mostly survived was the Rites of the Upper Classes in Nordic Society and what folks in "The Big House" did was/is usually very different than what those in more Humble quarters did. So WHY do so many modern Heathens think that the WOrking folks did the same things as the Trumps and such do compared to their own lives?

I have seen the same bias in other cultural religions, especially Greco-Roman groups. Most of those types seem to practice a very philosophical religion held by the literary elite, instead of the more gritty religion of the commoners.
While, as you say, the surviving sources tend to favor the elite, I honestly think a lot of people simply have unconscious elitist desires. Particularly if they were social outcasts in their formative years. There are too many would-be Lords and Sacral Kings and Senators and Philosophers running around for me!
Cheers.

Enjoy the experience.
